In a tense affair at JL Murphy Reserve Port Melbourne Sharks have defeated the Oakleigh Cannons 1-0 to claim a third successive win.
A 64th minute goal to Michael Eager proved to be the difference in what was another frustrating night for the Cannons filled with chances.
Coach Chris Taylor made a last-minute change to the starting line-up with Nick Epifano replacing the in-form Harry White up front.
It didn’t take long for the visitors to get going with set-piece specialist Joe Guest striking his chance in the 14th minute over the cross bar in what was the best of the early chances.
Though Oakleigh’s best chance came in the 55th minute when a long Blair Govan ball into the box fell to Matthew Foschini – whose attempt went well over the cross bar.
It was going to take something special to unlock the deadlock and Michael Eager stepped up.
After John Honos did well to parry a chaotic ball inside the box away – Eager volleyed the ball from just outside the box into the top corner to give the home side the lead.
Despite Oakleigh’s efforts to rectify the deficit it just wasn’t to be as the Sharks went on to claim the three points.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Cannons, who meet league leaders Avondale FC next week at Avengers Park.
