Thunder Too Good for Oakleigh

  • Thunder Too Good for Oakleigh

Three first half Dandenong Thunder goals were enough to secure the three points against an inaccurate Oakleigh Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve.

A dominant first half display from the Thunder saw them record their second consecutive win and the bragging rights in this battle of Melbourne’s South-East.

The visitors kicked off proceedings in the best possible way as Ben Carpenter found the opener in the fifth minute – putting the Cannons on the back foot early.

Dandenong showed no signs of fatigue after their hard-fought win over Kingston City last Monday – controlling the game in its early stages.

Heading into the match with 99 goals – Brandon Barnes notched up his century in the 14th minute to exacerbate the pressure on the home side.

The early deficit incentivised the home side into attack who were unlucky not to score when Nick Epifano and Milos Lujic both having chances saved.

Oakleigh’s best chance coming in the 22nd minute when Thunder goalkeeper Pierce Clark was forced into an acrobatic save to keep Epifano’s attempt out.

On the back foot – Thunder were given the chance to extend their lead with a penalty in the 28th minute but missed the chance as Peter Skapetis’s attempt flew over the crossbar into the carpark.

Though the visitors would have their third as Kieran Dover’s cross-turned-shot crept in – giving the Cannons a herculean task heading into the second half.

The home side came out of the break firing led by Epifano who created plenty of chances early in the second half.

The former South Melbourne attacker was rewarded for his persistence with a goal from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute – providing some hope of a comeback.

Galvanised by the goal – Oakleigh kicked into gear but were unable to break the fort held by Clark who was forced into a double save late in the contest.

The loss being Oakleigh's third of the season and will have to wait until next week’s clash away to Kingston City to rectify the result.
