Oakleigh Cannons FC is taking positives out of their 2-1 loss to Melbourne Knights FC on Friday night’s NPL VIC season opener.
The Cannons started off the game in confident fashion as Nick Epifano combined well with Matthew Foschini which nearly resulted in a Milos Lujic goal.
Minutes later John Honos showed off his goalkeeping skills after Gian Albano forced a save as the Knights got itself back into the game.
On the half hour mark, Oakleigh fans had their hands on their heads as Wade Dekker hit the post and both teams went into half-time goalless.
But seven minutes into the second-half, Hamish Watson banged in a goal which saw the Cannons trail.
With 20 minutes to go English signing Joe Guest equalised as Matthew Foschini was instrumental in the build-up, sending the fans into raptures.
Moments later Guest’s compatriot Harry White forced a wonderful save from Harry Cakarun to deny Oakleigh the lead.
Much to the Cannons’ dismay, Watson would get his brace in the 75th minute which ended up being the winning goal.
Wade Dekker added the team was remaining positive about the result.
“We’re obviously disappointed, sucks that we couldn’t get the win,” Dekker said.
“There were a lot of positives to take out of the game. We created a number of chances in the first-half and if we put them away, it’s a totally different game.”
