Oakleigh Record Consecutive Wins

  • Oakleigh Record Consecutive Wins

A Joe Guest goal of the season contender has fired the Oakleigh Cannons into a second straight league  win – defeating Pascoe Vale at home.

It was a frustrating night in front of goal for the Cannons who had multiple chances to kill the game off throughout the second half.

Buoyed by last week’s win away to South Melbourne – and Wednesday’s FFA Cup win – the home side played confidence throughout the contest.

Despite being the victim of many crude Pascoe Vale challenges, Ryan Paczkowski put in a man-of-the-match performance and was instrumental in setting up Guest’s 50th minute opener.

The Cannons number ten struck a loose ball in the box as sweetly as one could to give his side a deserved lead.

The goal acted as a catalyst to an avalanche of Oakleigh attacks as the visitors struggled to break through the defensive wall set up by the Cannons.

With momentum on their side – the Cannons surged forward and should have had a second in the 57th minute when Paczkowski found Wade Dekker who was unable to keep his header down from close range.

Tom Matthews was again instrumental at right back while Hamish Millar caused plenty of havoc – constantly throwing himself at every contest and rarely losing a fifty-fifty.

The Cannons thought their persistence had been rewarded when defender Blair Govan’s 80th minute header found the back of the net – only to be ruled offside.

Oakleigh found the back of the net again in the very next play only for Wade Dekker to be caught offside – exacerbating the home side’s frustration.

Pascoe Vale saved their most dangerous attack for the final minute as they struck the cross bar and missed the follow up completley - giving the home side a late scare.

Though the angst became jubilation as the Cannons did enough to hold on – recording two consecutive league wins for the first time this season.

Another tough trip contest awaits the side next week – who will front up to Green Gully.
