A team’s home ground advantage is one of the rare intangible factors in the game which can decide matches.

Whether it’s the way the grass is cut or the way the gyro rotates there is nothing like playing at home, especially in front of a loyal and vocal supporter base.

For Oakleigh Cannons FC it is no different.

Jack Edwards Reserve – the spiritual home of the Cannons – has become a fortress over the past year, with the side extending its unbeaten run at home to 16 with wins over Avondale and Heidelberg to kick off the new year.

The Cannons had to do it the hard way last Friday night, coming from behind to record an emphatic win against 2019 Premiers Heidelberg in a five goal thriller, with Gold Medalist Joe Guest once again stealing the show.

'Someone told me it took us ten games to get to six points last year so we're very happy with how we're going this year,' Guest said.

'We knew last year we needed big improvements and we did that at the second half of the season but it was really important for us to start well.'

The side’s last defeat at home came on 1 March 2019 in a three-one loss to Dandenong Thunder, with 14 of the matches since then, at Jack Edwards Reserve, ending in an Oakleigh Cannons victory.

An opportunity to extend this streak presents itself this Friday when South Melbourne comes to Jack Edwards Reserve in a massive encounter to kick off Round 3.

South Melbourne rectified its opening round loss in a high-scoring win against Eastern Lions at Lakeside Stadium with Harrison Sawyer netting a first half hattrick.

Last Time They Met

Oakleigh has won the last four meetings against South Melbourne.

The Cannons defeated this week’s opposition on both occasions last season – recording a two-nil win at Lakeside Stadium before storming home to four-one win at Jack Edwards Reserve later in the season.
