Oakleigh Cannons FC hosts last season’s NPL Victoria’s Premiers Heidelberg United in Round 2 at Jack Edwards Reserve.
Both sides enjoyed big wins in the opening round – with Heidelberg getting its premiership defence off to a flyer away to South Melbourne, while the Cannons outclassed Avondale FC.
Five players made their Oakleigh Cannons debut, including Joe Knowles who opened his NPL Victoria account when he combined with Gold Medalist Joe Guest to score the second goal.
Heidelberg also welcomed several new faces including Ajdin Fetahagic from Kingston City as well as Lachlan Barr from South Australia, while also keeping last season’s club best-and-fairest Adrian Zahra and fan-favourite Harry Noon.
Playing away to South Melbourne – Heidelberg picked up where they left off last season to record a commanding win ahead of their trip to Jack Edwards Reserve.
As for the Cannons, they rectified last season’s semi-final loss with a big home win against Avondale FC.
Ryan Paczkowski opened the scoring, with Knowles doubling the lead just before the break before Joe Guest sealed the win midway through the second half – recording Oakleigh’s first opening round win in eight years.
Last Time We Met
It was an uneventful goalless draw the last time these two sides met.
The match was the final one played at the Olympic Village prior to its renovations, with the Cannons holding the would-be Premiers to an important point away from home.
Earlier in the season it was the Cannons who were victorious, recording their first win of season 2019 with a nail-biting 2-1 win at home – which saw goalkeeper John Honos make several memorable saves.
That win being Oakleigh’s first over Heidelberg since August 2017.
