Heartbreak At Kingston Heath

A stoppage time Arnold Suew goal has secured the points for the Bentleigh Greens in a five-goal thriller against the Oakleigh Cannons.

In a match which had everything – including two red cards – the Cannons were unable to escape with the three points, despite rectifying a two-goal deficit late in the second half.

Coming into the match after a big win against Heidelberg United – Cannons coach Chris Taylor named an unchanged line-up.

While both sides had plenty to prove – it was Bentleigh who drew first blood as Matt Thurtell pounced on a loose ball in a congested penalty area to give the home side the lead in the tenth minute.

The goal sparked the Cannons into action as Harry White and Goran Zoric came close to equalising but were both denied by Greens shot-stopper Ryan Scott.

But the Cannons would soon find themselves another goal down as Thurtell had his second in the 27th minute.

Albeit the goal was not without its controversy as it appeared Jacob Alexander was offside in the build-up before playing the ball to Thurtell – but despite objection from the Cannons the goal stood.

Oakleigh’s woes were exacerbated midway through the second half when captain Tom Matthews was booked for a second time – reducing the Cannons to ten men with half-an-hour to play.

With the sending off appearing to be the nail in the coffin – last week’s hero Joe Guest converted from a set piece in the 81st to breathe life into the contest.

Sudddenly the Cannons found another gear and started attacking with purpose.

The Cannons were rewarded for their persistence as substitute Milos Lujic equalised in the 85th minute from the penalty spot to give the visitors hope of victory.

Bentleigh were reduced to ten-men in the build up as Alexander was given his marching orders for a last man challenge inside the box.

Though this ecstasy was shortlived for the Cannons as Arnold Suew – against the run of play – scored in the 90th minute to secure the victory for the home side in dramatic fashion.
