Oakleigh Cannons FC is pleased to announce it has signed former Sydney FC youth and NPL utility Matt Green on a two-year contract.
The Queenslander is versatile and can play as a defensive-midfielder or centre-back. He played for Brisbane Strikers before moving to the Sky Blues at 16 and most recently played for Gold Coast United.
Green is a Liverpool fan and notably played against the Reds, as well as Arsenal last year.
The 20-year-old added he saw an opportunity for career progress when he arrived at Jack Edwards Reserve.
“I’m absolutely excited and stoked to be here, I couldn’t wait to get started and I had my first session yesterday,” Green said.
“I was lucky enough to play against Arsenal and Liverpool. I got 30 minutes against both of them and I played against my childhood hero Steven Gerrard.
“At Sydney, I learnt off a lot of experienced boys that played at World Cups. Their approach to training and the consistency of their day-to-day routines from injury prevention to rehabilitation.
“The way they look after themselves is something I’ve really tried to incorporate into my game as well, hopefully I can bring it to Oakleigh Cannons FC and learn from the players here too.”
Green says he was keen to mature in his first stint in Victoria.
“I’m always looking to learn and to pick up from more experienced players here, learn from Chris Taylor and all the coaches here,” he said.
“I’ve had a few conversations with CT, he’s a super nice guy, I love talking to him and I can’t wait to work with him.
“I can’t wait to play in an FFA Cup, I haven’t played in it before, so it’ll be good to have a crack at it next year. The exposure it can bring and the buzz it can bring around the club is really exciting as well.”
