First Half Blitz Extends Unbeaten Run

  • First Half Blitz Extends Unbeaten Run

A first half blitz saw Oakleigh Cannons FC storm home to record a five-goal victory over Altona Magic at Jack Edwards Reserve.

Three goals inside the first 20 minutes gave the Cannons a comfortable buffer heading into the break, before substitute Wade Dekker and Goran Zoric added the nail in the coffin in the second half.

It was a fast start for the undefeated Cannons, with Joe Guest only needing four minutes to open the scoring – combining with teammates Ryan Paczkowski and Joe Knowles to produce a goal straight from the training track.

The Cannons doubled their lead 11 minutes later when Tyson Holmes slipped a ball through to Harry White who – despite protests from the Magic defence – remained onside and made no mistake from an acute angle.

Joe Knowles then completed the first half trifecta with his third goal of the season. The Western Australian put away the easiest of finishes in the 20th minute, being the beneficiary of a well-worked set-piece routine between Guest and Paczkowski – which earned a standing ovation from the home crowd.

Though Oakleigh’s dominant first half was soured by Knowles going down with a quad strain on the cusp of half-time, with Chris Taylor taking no risks and introducing Dekker in his place.

Dekker repaid the faith shown in him by his manager almost immediately after the break, with the 25-year-old putting the game to bed in the 50th minute after a clinical Tyson Holmes left-footed assist.

Buoyed by his first goal of the season, Dekker nearly had a second minutes later – only to be denied by the post.

Despite their comfortable lead, the Cannons continued to press – with Guest coming inches away from completing a brace when his 83rd minute flick from a corner was tipped over by the Magic goalkeeper.

The Cannons did their fifth of the game, with substitute Goran Zoric pouncing on a rebound off a Harry White set-piece to bury his first goal of the season in stoppage time.

In addition to the Cannons extending their undefeated start to the season, the side has also kept consecutive clean sheets

The win catapults the Cannons into the top two – two points off league leaders Hume City – ahead of next week’s home clash against Green Gully. po
